There are a few steps you can take when writing a term paper to make sure all of the correct information is included in it. These steps can be applied to term papers focusing on almost any topic and which have no special instructions, not depending on the field. The first step is to choose a topic for your term paper that interests you. Don’t make your term paper topic too general but keep your focus limited and attempt to gain your professor's approval.

You then need to find information that will support your term paper topic. For general information you can surf the Internet but most of your information should come from a mixture of sources. Many of the sources you will use in your term paper can be easily found in the library. State your thesis in one sentence and make sure your information in your term paper supports the thesis. Make a tentative outline of your term paper. There are many writing guides which can be used for writing up outlines. Your outline does not have to be too detailed.

You should attempt to organize the notes for your term paper based on your outline. Sometimes you can put codes down with the sections of your outline and then write these codes down next to the pertinent note card. Thus you will know which source should be included where and in what order. Now you can write the first draft of your term paper and revise it afterwards. When revising pay attention to the grammar, structure and content. It can help to have a checklist and make sure you have looked at everything you have listed. Once you have finished revising you are ready to type up the final version of your term paper with a title or cover page.
