An MLA research paper is a research paper written according to the Modern Language Association’s style and formatting standards. You can find handbooks written with rules for an MLA research paper at your local library or in the bookstore. One of the most important areas to become familiar with when writing an MLA research paper is the Works Cited page, the portion of your paper listing all the resources. Here are some tips for the Works Cited page of your MLA research paper.
MLA research paper citations must be listed in alphabetical order by the author’s last name. The entire document must be double spaced with an indent of half an inch on the second line of each source. If you cannot find the actual author’s name of the work you are citing, use the title of the piece in the place of the author’s name. One other important note to keep in mind when citing sources for your MLA research paper is to shorten, or abbreviate, all months aside from June, July and May (since these months are already short).
Most students run into issued when citing online materials for their MLA research paper. Remember that you need to list the web page title, website name, and the name of the company or persons posting the information. Your MLA research paper website citation should also have the current updated date and the date you visited the site to obtain the information you used in your paper.
If your MLA research paper includes information from an article you found online, be sure to include the length of the article (in pages, this will vary from site to site). If there are actual page numbers, list them. If all you know are the number of pages, list the number of pages. Also include the database and company who posted the information and the web address. Test your citation and link to verify that it is accurate. The reason this information is required is to help your reader easily find your sources.
