If you are preparing to write a literary research paper here are some tips to achieve a well written and concise paper.  First, sit down and speak with your professor about the specfications.
Ask him or her about topic limitations.  Can your literary research paper be about any literary work? Or, does your literary research paper need to be focused on a specific text? Should you seek expert advice via an interview? Should the paper be about more than a literary work, or should you write about techniques and theories within the realm of literature? Most teachers will want you to provide some historical research for the literary research paper.  If so, be sure to look into time periods and the effect of the time period within the author’s lifetime of within the character’s lifetime. What was going on during each time period and how does that relate to the text?  Lastly, be sure to get specifics on formatting your literary research paper.  Should you use MLA, APA, or Chicago?  If your teacher has a specific style, ask him or her if there are any deviations or specifications that may differ from the current manual in circulation/ publication.  These questions will help you to write a literary research paper that your instructor will appreciate.

As far as topic ideas for your literary research paper, review all of the texts you have studied in class. If your teacher wants you to expand upon the texts in your literary research paper, look into other texts that may relate to what you have recently read in class. You can focus your literary research paper on those related texts.  For example, you could compare the plays of Tennessee Williams with the writings of William Faulkner or Mark Twain in your literary research paper.  In this example, you could also compare the stage, or spoken word, versus a literary novel, meant to be read to one’s self. Within this topic idea, you could also discuss all of the effects of southern culture and the role that the civil war played in your literary research paper. Consider all of the writings you have studied and their relations to time and literary importance, resulting in a literary research paper that will earn you a good grade.
