Starting a research paper is a process that consists of several steps. Following the steps below will allow you to make a coherent, and understandable paper.
The first step in writing a research paper is planning. The planning phase can be further divided into several more smaller steps. Of course, the first step in making the paper is first generating a research paper topic. This can be done in many ways, for example, brainstorming, mind mapping, and cubing. These are just some of the ways to narrow down a topic, or to find more interesting aspects of the chosen topic.
Once you have chosen a topic, you can begin to read about the topic just to gain familiarity with it. Remember, a good research paper topic is something that interests you. So if you realize that the topic doesn’t suit your interests, you can change it now while it’s still early. When you are confident with your topic, you can make your thesis statement. The thesis statement is a statement that sums up what the research paper is about. In writing the research paper, you should also have an idea of what style you’ll be using in writing the paper. I find it easier to make research papers using the MLA style. If you are interested in using this style, consult the mla handbook for writers of research papers.
The next step in developing your paper is the information gathering phase. To make information gathering easier, it is advisable that you have access to a library. Gather everything you need for the research paper, this will be useful later in the writing phase as well as when you are making the research paper bibliography. It is also better if you can take notes using note cards, because this can help you in research paper citations later on so you can avoid plagiarism. That’s about it in starting a research paper, the next step will be writing, and doing revisions.
