By default, essay structure remains the same throughout all types of essays. Basically, every essay should be constructed according to the following structure:

  • Introductory paragraph containing thesis statement;
  • Body paragraphs;
  • Conclusion.

Obviously, essay structure can be different, but in that case we will be speaking of the custom shape of the essay. To train your writing skills and imagination, you may be required to construct an essay following a different pattern. Such essay structures, however, are more of an exception rather than a rule. Typical essay structure follows the pattern outlined above. Let us now cover in greater detail each of the elements.

  •  Introductory paragraph and thesis statement. Normally all essays are deductive according to their logic. It means that the introductory paragraph should bring forward the main idea of what your essay is all about and that in the text of the paper you are required to dwell on it in more detail. The thesis statement outlines the main idea of the paper; this idea is then elaborated in the body paragraphs and summarized in the conclusion part of the essay. Choosing a thesis statement predetermines the overall success of the paper, and for that reason has to be chosen carefully. The thesis statement should be selected carefully, should be well-thought out and worded. Now, you don't just begin any of your essays with composing a thesis statement - there is a lot of analysis and thinking involved into the process. You will have to collect materials you have for the essay, think of what is known to you, establish connections between facts and only then select a thesis. Remember, it determines the overall success of the paper, so it has to be selected carefully.
  • Body paragraphs. The core element of your essay is your body paragraphs. Typically there are two or three paragraphs that expand the main idea presented in the thesis statement. They reveal the main topic of the essay, one paragraph per topic. For instance, if there are two ideas you wanted to present in your paper, there should be two body paragraphs. Each body paragraph should open with a topic sentence, introducing the main idea of this very paragraph. Mixing two ideas in one paragraph is not allowed - one idea, one paragraph. Another important point to remember is that you should prove the points you made by valid examples or make clear arguments. If you are unable to persuade your audience, the whole essay would be pointless.
  • Conclusion. Conclusion normally takes one, final paragraph. It summarizes ideas voiced by the thesis statement and body paragraphs. Its purpose is to once again come to bring the reader to a point of agreement with the writer; and to weave all the threads voiced throughout the essay into one whole, making it clear and well-substantiated. A conclusion doesn't necessarily have a fixed structure;  however it should always incorporate ideas, which were expressed in the introductory and body paragraphs. A conclusion should never have wording, which is identical to either the thesis or the body paragraphs. While it should reiterate and summarize ideas, it should be worded differently.
