Art History Paper

Perhaps the most difficult object to overcome when writing an art history paper is to create an argument based on a visual representation. You must be able to translate the visual object into words that can be understood by a broad audience. In order to do this translation properly you must be familiar with the correct language to write an art history paper.  The description of the chosen art object for you art history paper must be displayed in argumentative terms. So you must be able to form some sort of opinion about the piece of artwork. Your art history paper will include a description of the art work but the key step is choosing a section of that art work whether it be artistic style, political statement of the times, religious connotation etc. and discuss. All the information presented in your art history paper will support your argument/statement.

There are approximately five different forms in which you can write an art history paper. A formal analysis will discuss how the formal parts of the artwork create a fresh perspective or understanding of that particular work. A sociological analysis demonstrates the historical era of that artwork and how that time period influenced the artist’s work. An art history paper as a biography will explore the artist’s life and the importance of their work. An iconography analysis in an art history paper explores how symbols appearing in the artwork were explained or represented. An iconology analysis uses texts and literature to interpret the artwork. It is important to remember the context of the artwork and what issues were present during the time of that works creation and original display. You should attempt to draw conclusion from your personal response and compare that to the response the piece provoked during its unveiling.
